Conveyancing
refers to the legal process of transferring ownership of a property from one person to another. A lawyer or solicitor is needed to carry the ownership transfer at a fee.

Title deed - legal document that proves ownership of a property.

Mortgage – is a loan given to a buyer by a bank or building society towards purchasing a property. The way the loan premiums are paid back determines the type of mortgages.

Mortgage premium – the monthly money paid buy a buyer to the bank or building society towards paying back the mortgage loan.

Mortgage Protection – an insurance policy that pays up when a buyer becomes unable to pay up mortgage premiums.

Leasehold – a leasehold is a long lease that applies mostly to flats. A buyer owns it for the duration of the lease and at the end the flat ownership reverts back to the landlord. During the lease a small rent is paid to the landlord.

Freehold – The buyer owns the land on which the building is built i.e. The buyer has full indefinite ownership of the property.

Management fee – a small annual fee payable to maintain common areas.

Survey – is the inspecting a building for defects needing repair. It is carried out before a sale is finalised. A report called a snag report is prepared and contains the list of items identified in the survey. It is recommended to engage the services of a qualified Chartered Surveyor or Engineer to do the survey and report.

Mortgage types
- Repayment mortgage – part of the mortgage premium goes towards paying back the loan and the rest towards the interest on the loan.
- Interest only mortgage – all of the premium covers the interest. The loan is paid off separately using a long term investment policy or plan.
- Islamic mortgage – no interest is paid on the mortgage as this is contrary to Sharia law. Special arrangements are made to pay back the loan.

Remortgage
- This can be viewed as selling part of the house to yourself. You get the cash but you have to pay back the loan premiums to the bank or building society.
