Files
A website is a collection of files that are stored on a computer called a server. When you open a page you are simply opening one of these files. These files are simple text files that can be created using a text editor such as notepad, or wordpad. The files are saved with a .html or .htm file extension. Other programs such as Dreamweaver or Frontpage are available to automate the process of creating html files. I use HTML kit for creating my website files. This is a free download programme that has a menu for adding tags on different information that I want displayed on my web pages.

Structure
The structure and layout of the content on each website file is organised using HTML tags. As an example you have different tags for describing parts of your web page such as the title, head, body, headings, paragraphs, tables, lists etc.

Links
Each of the website files or pages is linked together using tags called anchors. These tags when clicked allow you to jump from one page to another hence the term surfing the internet. A browser is a programme that is used to open web pages. Examples of browsers are Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Netscape.
