How much does it cost to create and run a website?

Design – An individual or a web design company can design a website for you for a fee. The company may factor in their time and overheads when giving you a quotation. Check to see if the price includes the programming technologies that I mentioned earlier. Anyone with a basic knowledge of html can also design a website.
Domain Name registration – You need to register your domain name. This is the name that your website is called. There is a yearly fee for keeping your domain name active. This is about €10 or less per year. If you do not renew your domain name it can be re-registered by someone else and you can lose it. Do not underestimate the need to renew you domain name, there is a market out there where valuable domain names can be sold for thousands of dollars.
Hosting – After your website files are created they must be uploaded to a server. The company which manages the server is not the same as your web designer. Your web hoster company will charge you a monthly fee for keeping the files on their server. This fee can be €7 or more per month. Check that the host your chose offers php and MySQL because you may need these if you want to have information that is updated regularly on your website.
Managing your website – Managing your site includes updating it with the latest information, changing images, and optimising it for search engines e.t.c. Your web designer should at least manage uploading and modifying website content for a month after the website is live. After that you are on your own unless you go for a Content Management System.
Content Management System (CMS)– A CMS gets rid of the limitations of a static website. A CMS is a package that helps you to manage the information that is displayed on your website even if you have no website design knowledge. Online shops, social networking sites, airline booking sites use content management systems to get the information from visitors. You can negotiate with your website designer to include the price for a CMS on your website design fee.
