Programming Tools and technologies

We design websites using or to include the following :
  1. HTML - for marking up the information that is to be displayed on a web page. Tags are used to mark up different sections of your website pages.
  2. DOM – the Document object model (DOM) is a way of giving names to different HTML tags on your web page so that you can refer to them. It allows order on your web page so that it is easy to refer to different parts of your website.
  3. CSS - cascading style sheets for defining colours, sizes, positions of the information or HTML tags that you display on your webpage.
  4. JavaScript and DHTML for creating dynamic effects, interactive and responsive websites. Some visitors to your site may have scripts turned off on their browsers. This can render your site unusable if you are over reliant on JavaScript.
  5. Php – is for creating server side code that allows your website to serve different pages and change information displayed on pages passed on user input. There are other server side languages available such as Cold fusion, Perl, ASP but php is gaining more users because of its simplicity and the fact that you can download it and use it for free i.e. it is open source. A popular website Facebook uses php.
  6. MySql – is used as the databases backbone on most websites. MySQL is free to download too and it works very well with php.
  7. Ajax – for creating fasters responding pages that load new information without refreshing each time a web page is requested from a server. Ajax is a powerful tool that combines the DOM, Javascript, and PHP(or server side language database of your choice) and MySQL(or server database of your choice). Popular websites like Google Maps use Ajax to make the opening and navigation of maps very fast.
  8. PayPal for online payments integration. There are other online payment systems available but PayPal has grown to be a market leader because of eBay.
  9. SEO – Search engine optimisation involves submitting your websites to search engines and rewriting your web pages to include keywords. The objective is for your site to eventually show on the search engine results when users type keywords on search engines like Google and Yahoo. SEO is a continuous process that requires time and effort because millions of websites are created every day and each one of them is competing for the first page position on the search engines. Some people actually make a living by optimising clients’ websites for search engines.
