The multi-department retailer is confirming why you are best off not owning a retail footprint in a recession. Analysts say Amazon has benefi ted from the downturn in the U.S., in particular, with struggles at the Borders book chain and the bankruptcy of Circuit City all driving traffic to Amazon.com. Amazon’s release of the Kindle and the continued improvement of its site to enable access from anywhere have also contributed to its upward path. Additionally, Amazon.com will begin selling e-books for reading on Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch. In the fourth quarter of 2008, Amazon partnered with manufacturers to reduce packaging with an eye towards sustainability. Partners include Fisher-Price, Mattel, Microsoft, and electronics manufacturer, Transcend.
